Get Hired as an Engineering Manager
This page is the cover for my recruiting articles, so I can use peterszasz.com/get-hired-as-an-em instead of a list of individual posts.
Between May and June 2024, I ran a mini-series covering the hiring process for Engineering Managers looking for a new job. I’ve partnered with Péter Batiz on this series, an experienced independent recruiter, who’s been helping startups and scale-ups find tech talent for more than a decade. I believe his contributions added a valuable perspective to my experiences.
I divided the content into the following five articles.
🔎 Capturing your Preferences: This part introduces a document to objectively rank job factors, helping candidates clarify their priorities and make informed decisions when evaluating opportunities.
📝 Perfecting your CV and LinkedIn profile: Part 2 focuses on fine-tuning applications by customizing them for each role, emphasizing key skills, business impact, and relevant experiences to increase visibility and chances of landing interviews.
📥 Searching and Applying: In part 3, I discuss how and where to find and apply for engineering manager roles, explain tracking tools, and talk about the role of cover letters in maximizing interview chances.
💬 Interviewing: This part covers how to prepare for interviews, the various interview types, and what questions to ask at various stages from different interviewers. Update: There's a new article covering a specific aspect of interviewing: How to Spot Red Flags when Interviewing for an Engineering Manager Position
🤝 Closing the offer: Finally, I focus on closing the job offer by validating it against previous preferences, mention negotiating considerations, and how to transition professionally from your current job.
You can download the entire series, including all the articles above, as a mini book, ready to read on your favorite e-reader or tablet:
I was considering putting these behind a signup paywall, but I decided that I would like people who receive updates from me to be genuinely interested in the content, and not forced to do so in order to get a download link. So, feel free to take this mini book without signup – but if you are interested in Engineering Leadership topics, add your email here, and I'll notify you once I publish something. Guaranteed no SPAM.
Since publishing the articles, we had a dedicated podcast episode of The Retrospective interviewing Péter Batiz, and talking about the characteristics of the current hiring landscape. Listen to the episode in your favorite podcasting app, or watch it here:
